Many many moons ago I suggested that Ed West might be considered by many to be an Enabler Of Right-Wing Racial Hatred. Going by many of his blogs and the comments underneath them this would seem to be the case. Take this example: “‘Irish Travellers are part of the British heritage and need to be accommodated’. Really?“, ignore the blog, no one reads much beyond the headline these days. The real meat is in the comments, or rather would be if they weren’t so heavily moderated.
And a little note on DT moderation … It’s reactive, not proactive. The mods, due to legal reasons, do not roam the blogs looking for things to moderate. Legally the DT would be culpable for everything posted on their site of they were proactive and as such would probably be a lot harsher than they are now. Instead there’s a little report link and anyone, even in they aren’t signed in and even if they don’t actually comment on the blogs themselves can hit that button. Anyone. Even lurkers. So if that link gets a click and then a click to confirm the mods will look at the offending comment and act as they must according to the law. That law is Public Order Act 1986, which prohibits, by its Part 3, expressions of racial hatred, which is defined as hatred against a group of persons by reason of the group’s colour, race, nationality (including citizenship) or ethnic or national origins. Section 18 of the Act says:
A person who uses threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour, or displays any written material which is threatening, abusive or insulting, is guilty of an offence if—
- (a) he intends thereby to stir up racial hatred, or
- (b) having regard to all the circumstances racial hatred is likely to be stirred up thereby.
So they then have to remove it. So if you want to complain don’t complain about the mods, don’t complain about the person who is following the law either. Complain about yourself for breaking the law in the first place.
Anyway, let’s look at a few of the surviving comments:
What a charmless bunch of haters.
But let’s get back to Ed. I asked him what he thought about it:
So there we have him. Ed West: Enabler of Right-Wing Hatred? Yes. Participant in Right-Wing Hatred? Not guilty.
And there’s a certain amount of honesty in what he does there. He raises the issues that are of interest to not only him but to other people as well. He responds well to positive comments thereon. But when it comes to illegal and deplorable responses from people motivated by hatred he steps well away. As should we all (having prodded the report button once or twice.)
